Mathematics Effectively

The Cirdis are developing a three-year project begun in 2005 in collaboration with the Regional School Authority of Umbria:
"Mathematics Effectively: Thinking, Operating, Communicating (Through) Mathematics" (2005-2006)
The project is being carried out in the II and IV classes of primary school and the I classes of junior high school of the Region of Umbria and involves approximately 700 students.
It is a research-action project which intends to suggest innovative teaching strategies for a more effective learning of mathematics and statistics, taking also into account the guidelines of the new mathematics curriculum outlined in the recent reform of the Italian school system.

Numerical and Statistical Literacy at school

In 2005 the CIRDIS in collaboration with the University “La Sapienza” of Rome) and with the Museum of Mathematics “I Racconti di Numeria” of Rome carried out the project
Numerical and Statistical Literacy at school (2005), funded by Italian Ministry of Education within the Initiatives for diffusion of scientific literacy.
This project allowed developing of the new version of the hypertext “The Galton Board”.

Statistics for knowledge, reasoning, understanding, deciding

In 2004 the CIRDIS collaborated with National Italian Statistical Institute (ISTAT) in developing the project
Statistics for knowledge, reasoning, understanding, deciding(2004) - Online course of statistical literacy, funded by MIUR (Italian Ministry of Education) within the initiatives for diffusion of scientific literacy. The hypertext "The value of data" has been developed within the project. It's available on the Istat website: http://www.istat.it/servizi/studenti/valoredati/

Statistical education and Assessment

CIRDIS carried out a research project, co-funded by MIUR (Ministry of Education, University and Research), on:
"Statistical Education and Assessment: tools, methods and new technologies" (2000-2002)
The great bulk of data that has been acquired in the project "New teaching strategies for learning statistics" served as a basis for deepening the assessment methods of educational experimentations.

Furthermore, an experimentation of an introductory course on statistical inference has been carried out in about twenty classes of the upper secondary school.

A large school experimentation

CIRDIS carried out a research project, funded by MIUR (Ministry of Education, University and Research), on:

»"Experimenting New Strategies for Learning Statistics" (1998 - 2000)

The experimentation involved about 400 teachers at all school level and more than 6,000 italian pupils.
