HIDDEN MARKOV MODELS AS GENERAL-PURPOSE MODELS
FOR TIME SERIES

Abstract
Hidden Markov models (HMMs) have been used for over four decades in
signal processing, mainly in the context of automatic speech
recognition. They have been applied in a wide range of disciplines such
as acoustics, process control, biosciences, climatology, econometrics,
image processing, computer vision and text recognition. Considerable
interest has been generated by their application to protein sequence
analysis in the field of bioinformatics.
The purpose of this presentation is to illustrate the simplicity and
versatility of HMMs as general-purpose models for time series, for
example to describe multivariate, categorical and circular-valued time
series, and to series with trend, seasonal components or other
covariates. A few practical issues, concerning computation, missing
values and interval-censored observations will be mentioned.
Applications from various fields will be used to illustrate the models.
