--- Mercoledì 7 luglio 2004, ore 16.00 in Aula 8 Dipartimento di Matematica (Via C. Saldini n.50, Milano) SEMINARIO DI MATEMATICA APPLICATA --------------------------------- Mathematics in Cancer Therapy Planning (cancer theryp hyperthermia, PDEs, fast adaptive multilevel solution, homogenization for microvascular model). Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Peter Deuflhard President
Konrad Zuse Zentrum (ZIB) Freie Universitat Berlin Fachbereich Mathematik und Informatik Institut für Mathematik II (WE II) ABSTRACT: The
talk will survey a long term collaboration on regional hyperthermia of the
author's ZIB group ``Computational medicine'' with the Charite, Virchow Clinics,
The
general computational medicine paradigm consists of three steps: (a) map the
real patient from the clinical environment to a virtual patient in the computer,
(b) model, simulate, and optimize the medical treatment in a virtual lab, (c)
play the obtained results back to the real situation.
Step
(a) includes the segmentation of medical imaging data and 3D grid generation.
Step (b) involves mathematical modelling (like microvascular thermoregulation by
homogenization), adaptive multilevel FEMs for the harmonic Maxwell's equations
at high frequencies and for the so-called bio-heat transfer equation (elliptic
PDE) over the heterogeneous 3D individual patient model. As it turns out, the
crucial optimization part in this context reqires only a small amount of work
within the whole setting. In order to illustrate step (c), several individual
patient results will be given. Finally, further impact of our work in this
medical field will be described.
