SOCIAL EVENTS

Possible excursions to be organized during the conference time are listed
below. These will be organized according to the initial indication of
interest by the conference attendants.

- Su Nuraxi of Barumini:
a special type of defensive structure, known as nuraghi, built in the
Bronze Age, for which no parallel exists anywhere else, developed on the
island of Sardinia. The complex consists of circular defensive towers in the
form of truncated cones built of dressed stone, with corbel-vaulted internal
chambers. The complex at Barumini, which was extended and strengthened in
the first half of the 1st millennium under Carthaginian pressure, is the
finest and most complete example of this remarkable form of prehistoric
architecture.

- Cagliari:
A tour in the ancient part of the capital of Sardinia

- Is Zuddas Caves:
The cave Is Zuddas is famous for a hall which contains many beautiful
Helictites or Eccentriques. They are built on Aragonite. A skeleton of the
endemic rodent Prolagus Sardus is on display near the cave entrance. It is
extinct for about 400 years and lived only in Sardinia and Corsica.

- Nora and Pula old ruins:
Nora and Pula villages are located at about 30 km. from Caglairi. Their
ruins were probably built in the Nuragic age, even if for this historical
period information are very generic. According to local traditions, Nora is
the most ancient town of Sardinia, and this seems to be also confirmed from
the ancient Phoenician stele. Recent archeological discoveries revealed a
sacred areas and an ancient Punic district.
