MODELLI MARKOVIANI LATENTI PER L'ANALISI
DELLA QUALITA' DELL'ARIA
Riassunto.
Hidden Markov models (HMMs) are latent stochastic processes for the
analysis of the dynamics of an observed process. The latent (or hidden)
states of the HMMs represent different levels of the observed process.
Here we assume the probability density function of every observation,
given the contemporary hidden state, is gaussian. We apply gaussian HMMs
to study a data set about air pollution which presents periodicities:
the hourly mean concentration of carbon monoxide varies according to the
dynamics of the 24 day-hours and of the week days (working days/week ends
and holydays). Hence we introduce in the model both a daily component
(describing the 24 hours dynamics) and a time-varying covariate
(describing the week-days dynamics). The dynamics of the hidden states,
representing different weather conditions, is described by a Markov chain.
