Summary

A data depth is a measure of how deep or how
central a given point is with respect to a multivariate
distribution. It provides a new geometric approach for
quantifying complex characteristics of a multivariate
distribution, and gives rise to a new set of parameters
for the distribution. These parameters, including
location, scale, quantiles, and skewness, can all be
visualized by simple graphs. Furthermore, the center
outward ranking of the sample points provided by a data
depth leads to a systematic nonparametric multivariate
inference scheme. Applications to DD-(depth
vs. depth) plots, multivariate rank tests, multivariate
process control, robust regression, construction of
confidence regions, and determination of P-values for
hypothesis testing will be discussed. Some applications
will be illustrated using a multivariate dataset of
aviation surveillance results from several airlines.
