We invite applications for a Senior Post-Doctoral Research Associate position to join the New Approaches to Bayesian Data Science: Tackling Challenges from the Health Sciences programme. This is an exciting, cross-disciplinary research project that will develop new methods for Bayesian statistics that are fit-for-purpose to tackle contemporary Health Science challenges: such as real-time inference and prediction for large scale epidemics; or synthesizing information from distinct data sources for large scale studies such as the UK Biobank. Methodological challenges will be around making Bayesian methods scalable to big-data and robust to (unavoidable) model errors. The £3M programme is funded by EPSRC, and brings together research groups from the Universities of Lancaster, Bristol, Cambridge, Oxford and Warwick. See https://www.lancaster.ac.uk/bayes-for-health/ for more details.

You should have, or be close to completing, a PhD in Statistics or a related discipline. You will be experienced in one of more of the following areas: Bayesian statistics, computational statistics, statistical machine learning, statistical genetics, inference for epidemics. You will have demonstrated the ability to develop new statistical methodology. We are particularly keen to encourage applicants with strong computational skills. A demonstrable ability to produce academic writing of the highest publishable quality is essential.

You will join us on an indefinite contract, however the role remains contingent on external funding which, at this time, is for 28 months.

For further details, including how to apply see: https://hr-jobs.lancs.ac.uk/Vacancy.aspx?ref=A3098

Candidates who are considering making an application may contact Professor Paul Fearnhead (p.fearnhead at lancaster.ac.uk) to discuss the programme in greater detail.

Lancaster’s internationally recognised Statistics group is one of the largest and strongest Statistics groups in the UK with 25 academic staff, and a vibrant community of post-doctoral researchers and research students. The Statistics group sits within the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, one of the UK’s top departments in the Mathematical Sciences, ranked 5th overall in the 2014 Research Excellence Framework and 3rd for the impact of its research. The department provides an environment which aims to meet the individual needs of each member of staff. We are committed to family-friendly and flexible working policies, and seek to promote a healthy work-life balance. The University is a charter member of Athena SWAN and has held a Bronze award since 2008, in recognition of good employment practice to address gender equality in higher education and research. The Department achieved its own Athena SWAN Bronze award in 2017 and is a registered supporter of the London Mathematical Society’s Good Practice Scheme.

We welcome applications from people in all diversity groups.
