Egregi Proff. Agosto e Giudici,

ho letto con interesse il vostro draft, per il quale vi ringrazio. Mi 
permetto, facendo seguito al vs. invito ad attivare una discussione sul 
tema, di fare alcuni brevi commenti sui risultati in esso contenuti.

Parto dal modello di crescita proposto, che riscrivo nella forma

     (1) $\lambda_t = C(1+y_{t-1})^\alpha \lambda_{t-1}^\beta$ ,

dove $C = \exp\{\omega\}$. Usando la tecnica della media condizionata, 
ottengo

     (2) $E[\lambda_t] = C E[(1+y_{t-1})^\alpha \lambda_{t-1}^\beta] = C 
E_{\lambda_{t-1}}[\lambda_{t-1}^{\beta} 
E_{y_{t-1}}}[(1+y_{t-1})^\alpha|\lambda_{t-1}]]$

$= C\lambda_{t-1}^\beta 
E_{y_{t-1}}[(1+y_{t-1})^\alpha|\lambda_{t-1}]\approx 
C\lambda_{t-1}^\beta(1+\lambda_{t-1})^\alpha\simeq 
C\lambda_{t-1}^{\alpha+\beta}$

per $\lambda_{t-1}\gg 1$. Quanto è sbagliata questa approssimazione? 
Ovviamente ciò dipende da $\lambda_{t-1}$ ed $\alpha$. Nella figura 
riportata di seguito confronto la media esatta con quella approssimata 
per diversi valori di $\alpha$ e $\lambda_{t-1}$.

Si riconosce dalla figura che l'approssimazione è via via migliore al 
crescere di $\lambda_{t-1}$ e dunque la differenza tra il valore di 
$E[\lambda_t]$ del vs. modello e quello approssimato della (2) per $t$ 
grande si genera tutta nelle prime iterazioni del processo di crescita, 
cioè per $t=0,1,2$, ... quando $\lambda_t \simeq 1$. Ad ogni modo, la 
formula (2) mostra che il modello proposto collassa ad uno di crescita 
esponenziale standard nel limite $\alpha+\beta=1$, per il quale si ha 
$\lambda_t = C^t$. Trovo confortanti i risultati in Tabella 1, che 
mostrano che $\alpha+\beta = 0.937$ per il caso cinese. Questo dimostra, 
in effetti, una discrepanza rispetto ad un modello di crescita 
esponenziale standard, ancorché limitata. La condizione $\alpha + \beta 
\simeq 1$ sembra essere confermata anche da una osservazione 
superficiale della Fig. 1, indipendentemente dall'intervallo temporale 
utilizzato per ottenere $\alpha$ e $\beta$.

Quello che mi riesce più difficile capire è quale sia il significato del 
parametro $\omega=0.472$ per il caso cinese, che ottenete, così come 
dichiarate, da un fit su tutti i dati disponibili, cioè includendo sia 
il periodo di ascesa del virus che quello di regressione. Noto che il 
valore da voi ottenuto per $\omega$ corrisponde ad un tasso di crescita 
$C = \exp(\omega) \simeq 1.60$, cioè ad un processo realmente espansivo. 
Tuttavia, questo numero non sembra veritiero, perché mitigato 
dall'andamento di $\lambda_t$ nella fase regressiva del virus... Almeno 
questo è quello che (come lettore medio) capisco, probabilmente 
sbagliando...

A mio modesto parere, l'andamento crescente e quello decrescente di 
$\lambda_t$ sono legati a dinamiche complesse nettamente diverse e 
quindi varrebbe la pena trattarli separatamente. Il primo, specialmente 
nella fase iniziale, è determinato dall'espansione libera del virus, e 
quindi fornisce informazioni sulla capacità diffusiva intrinseca 
dell'epidemia, mentre il secondo è il risultato delle misure di 
contenimento adottate dalle autorità cinesi. Una stima di $\omega$ 
relativo alla fase crescente dà informazioni di natura epidemiologica, 
mentre una stima di $\omega$ nella fase regressiva del virus potrebbe 
dare un'indicazione alle autorità, italiane o estere, sui tempi di 
recupero attesi laddove venissero adottate misure draconiane analoghe a 
quelle cinesi.
