*Short course in "Environmental epidemiology" (3 days, Verona)*

1) Tuesday 24/5 (14.00-16.00)
2) Thursday 26/5 (14.00-16.00)
3) Tuesday 31/5 (14.00-16.00)

Course syllabus:
- A summary of basic epidemiological concepts
- Strengths and limitations of epidemiological studies
- Research challenges in environmental studies
- Concepts of exposure pathways, exposure routes, dose, effect,
susceptibility windows
- Exposure assessment: sources of information
- Characteristics of ideal exposure estimates
- Short-term vs. long-term effects of air pollution
- Study designs: short-term health effects
- Study designs: long-term health effects
- Methods and models for spatial exposure assessment (spatial
interpolation, land-use regression, dispersion models)
- Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
- The use of biomarkers in environmental epidemiology
- Association vs. causation
- Hill’s Criteria for causality
- Approaching causality in environmental studies: the Viadana experience (a
case study)

Venue: Aula Igiene & Statistica "Roberto de Marco", Istituti Biologici 2,
strada Le Grazie 8, Verona.
