Summary
The use of statistical methods for the analysis and interpretation of data is widespread. Corresponding statistical issues in the planning of studies receive rather less emphasis, perhaps in part because the discussion is fragmented as between sampling techniques, crosssectional and longitudinal studies and as between observational versus experimental investigations. An emphasis in the lectures will be on the unity of the ideas involved. A variety of specific applications will be described in outline.
