A bivariate marginal likelihood approach

to the specification and estimation

of spatial econometrics models

Abstract:
Traditionally spatial econometrics models are based on a Cliff-Ord type specification although they present a number of computational problems and formal pitfalls at the estimation stage especially when the sample size is very large as it is the case when dealing with massive geo-referenced datasets. We reformulate a spatial econometric model through a bivariate specification of a random field and we propose a Maximum Likelihood estimator based on the general idea of coding. The approach we propose does not require a full specification of the weights matrix and the estimation is computationally extraordinarily simple. We derive the closed form solution of the ML estimators of the model's parameters, we prove their small sample unbiasedness and we suggest two approaches to hypothesis testing based on the exact Fisher information matrix and on bootstrap. The theory is presented at a fairly general level so as to cover a large class of models. We develop in details the case of Cliff-Ord type cross-sectional models, but the approach can be easily extended to discrete choice and panel data models.
