Variable Window Spatial Scan Statistics

Abstract
Scan statistics have been investigated since the appearance of two 
articles by Naus (1965a and 1965b). Google Scholar search of the term 
“scan statistic” returned 104 hits for the first five month of 2010 and 
a total of 1,370 hits since the year 2005.
In this lecture an extensive introduction to the area of scan statistics 
will be presented. Recent results for two dimensional variable window 
scan statistics will be discussed, including Bayesian-type scan 
statistics. Numerical results will be presented to evaluate the 
performance of these scan statistics. Open problems and future 
directions for research in this area will be presented as well.
