ISBIS-2010, the biennial international symposium sponsored by the International Society for Business and Industrial Statistics (ISBIS), will be held at a delightful resort on the Adriatic coast, the Grand Hotel Bernardin, Adriatic Resort & Convention Center, Portoroz, in Slovenia, during 6–9 July 2010 (
(www.action-m.com/isbis2010).

The scientific program will focus on important statistical issues relating to productivity improvement and decision-making at all levels of business and industry, including financial services and health services.

There will be particular emphasis on industrial applications of Statistical Image Analysis, with an opening plenary address and tutorial introduction to the subject by Professor Jean Serra, co-founder of Image Analysis and Mathematical Morphology in the 1960s; and on future directions for statistical computing for large and complex data sets, concluding with a plenary address by one of the leading figures in the area, Dr Lee Edlefsen of REvolution Computing. Another interesting feature will be an ASMBI Discussion Paper by Ming Li, Steve Holland, and Bill Meeker, on automatic crack detection in image sequence data.

The symposium will be preceded, on 5 July 2010, by a half-day Developmental workshop for young statisticians led by the Executive Director of the American Statistical Association, Dr Ron Wasserstein, and the current President of the ASA, Dr Sastry Pantula.

ISBIS-2010 will provide a varied and stimulating scientific program of invited and contributed papers, and excellent opportunities for formal and informal exchanges. Authors will have the opportunity to submit extended versions of their papers for publication in the Society's journal, Applied Stochastic Models in Business and Industry. And there will be an enjoyable social program.
