Research Associate in Medical Statistics 

 

Respiratory Epidemiology and Public Health, Population Genetics and Gene Therapy, 

National Heart and Lung Institute

 

Salary: £30,520 - £38,930 per annum

 

The Respiratory Epidemiology and Public Health group at the National Heart and Lung Institute, Imperial College, is looking to recruit a Research Associate in Medical Statistics.

 

The Respiratory Epidemiology and Public Health group undertakes many studies on chronic respiratory disease, both local projects and large international surveys including the European Community Respiratory Health Survey, the Burden of Obstructive Lung Disease and the surveys of the GA2LEN network of excellence.  The group is associated with the MRC-HPA funded centre for environment and health. 

 

You will be associated with a variety of studies but will have a major role in the Burden of Obstructive Lung Disease, an international survey of chronic obstructive lung disease focused on low and middle income countries.  You will be expected and encouraged to develop as an independent investigator holding your own independent grants.

 

You will have a first degree in mathematics or statistics and a PhD or equivalent qualification in epidemiology or statistics.  You should also have a good working knowledge of a statistical package in the field of epidemiology preferably STATA and strong data analysis skills.

 

The post is full-time, fixed term for four years and is based at the Royal Brompton campus.

The Purpose of the post

 

The post holder will be responsible for providing statistical input to a variety of epidemiological projects including the BOLD survey.  At the research assessment exercise in 2008 the epidemiology and public health return from Imperial College was rated second in rank nationally by the Guardian newspaper. 

 

The respiratory epidemiology and public health group undertakes many studies on chronic respiratory disease, both local projects and large international surveys including the European Community Respiratory Health Survey, the Burden of Obstructive Lung Disease and the surveys of the GA2LEN network of excellence.  The group is associated with the MRC-HPA funded centre for environment and health. 

 

BOLD is a prevalence survey of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) conducted among non-institutionalised adults aged >40 years.  It has been running for several years and is now focused on low and middle income countries.  COPD is projected to rank fifth in burden of disease in 2020. 

 

The post offers the opportunity for the Research Associate to work with International leaders in the field of respiratory epidemiology and participate in an area of respiratory medicine that is increasing in significance.

 

 

 

Key Responsibilities

 

*	Provide statistical input into major studies of respiratory disease
*	Assist in the general co-ordination of research projects and to co-ordinate in the absence of colleagues
*	Manage and train more junior statisticians and act as a supervisor to students wishing to take higher degrees
*	Provide oversight and advice to collaborating centres on the sampling of populations
*	Develop a career as a leader in the area of medical statistics through raising grants and writing papers
*	Provide feedback to partners with the data they collect

*	Analyse the data collected from research projects

*	Record, analyse and communicate scientific data together with a clear interpretation of results
*	Make a strong contribution to reporting study results, including writing up for publication in peer-reviewed journals

·         Liaise effectively with other researchers Internationally with an interest in the use of these data

·         Participate in seminars and work-in-progress meetings within the departments

*	Develop relevant research skills
