Abstract

Social surveys are usually affected by missing data problems due to unit
and item nonresponse. Since it is unlikely that a sample of respondents
is a random sample, social scientists should take the missing data
problem into account in their empirical analyses. After presenting
micro-level evidence on the role of the socio-demographic
characteristics of the population and the characteristics of the data
collection process as predictors of survey participation, we focus
attention on the potential bias caused by item nonresponse and
imputation in the analysis of income variables and poverty measures.
