Kick-off meeting of the ISI Special Interest Group in Sports Statistics – Video Conference
The Special Interest Group in Sports Statistics of the International Statistical Institute has been recently revitalized and the kick-off meeting will take place during the Conference ASA 2019, with the participation of members from Europe and US even through a video conference. The aim of this Special Interest Group is to promote the understanding, development and good practice of sports statistics worldwide. Much of the activity is planned together with the initiatives of the “Big Data analytics in sports” network BDsports, a research project developed within the activities of the Big&Open Data Innovation Laboratory at the University of Brescia, Italy.

Plenary Session: Statistics meets Sports – when figures are more than numbers
Prof. Christophe Ley – Professor of Mathematical Statistics at Ghent University
The combination of advanced statistical methods with sports, be it under the name Sport Statistics, Sport Analytics, Machine Learning or Artificial Intelligence methods in Sports, has been very fruitful over the past decade. More and more sport clubs have recognised this importance and hired data scientists, with concrete success. In this talk I will give an overview of recent advances in this fertile research field (with principal focus on soccer), present modern challenges and conclude with an outlook on the future of sport statistics.

So, look forward to seeing you in Brescia,
Maurizio Carpita and Luigi Fabbris
