WORKSHOP ON

TEACHING STATISTICS IN HUMAN AND BEHAVIORAL SCIENCES

Naples, 7th May 2019 h09:30

Dipartimento di Scienze Politiche

Erasmus+ Project “ALEAS - Adaptive LEArning in Statistics”

http://aleas-project.eu/

The workshop is the first multiplier event of the “ALEAS - Adaptive LEArning in Statistics” project, and it aims to share the intellectual output of the project and to build a community of practice. ALEAS consortium is financially supported within the ERASMUS+ KA2 strategic partnership programme. The ALEAS consortium includes one start-up company, Smarted srl (Italy), and four Universities: Democritus University of Thrace (Greece), Jacob University Bremen GGMBH (Germany), University of Valencia (Spain), University of Naples Federico II (Italy) that leads the consortium.

Statistics is an important component in the training of students in most programs or university curricula, and not only in the more technical ones. Statistics is offered in undergraduate and master programs like Cultural Heritage, Health Sciences, Medicine, Political Science, Psychology, Social Science, among the others, where students do not have to pass a Math exam before. Many scientific articles highlighted that there are several reasons that may negatively affect the performance in Statistics of the students involved in social and human sciences programs. In broad terms these reasons are gathered in three categories: lack in background knowledge; psychological traits of anxiety towards mathematics and statistics; lack in motivation for the study of Statistics.

The main goal of ALEAS is to design and set-up a self-learning environment that is based on digital platform to support students from undergraduate courses in learning Statistics; the software will be designed to act as an intelligent agent that should be able to evaluate the students’ difficulties and to propose proper self learning-paths through the ALEAS environment.

The objective of the workshop is to bring together experts in the field of education and teachers and trainers in Statistics to share their past experiences and to discuss about causes of students' low performance in Statistics and to explore possible best practices.

Stakeholders, professionals and University teachers and researchers are invited to join the workshop. The participation to the workshop is free of charge, to register send an email to francesco.palumbo a unina.it or cristina.davino a unina.it.
