Summary:  It is the goal of this course to give students an overview about
the role, elements, organization and production of statistics for the
European Monetary Union in the European System of Central Banks. Next to
the development and the status quo, also the coming new data projects and
strategic orientations for the future will be addressed.  The cooperation
and complementarity with the European Statistical System (ESS) will also be
discussed. Finally, in a workshop, the current situation and development of
non-performing loans in the European and the Italian banking system will be
analyzed and debated.

Lecture 1: Introduction to the ESCB and its statistical function. Evidence
based policy making in the ESCB. The many users of ESCB statistics. What
kind of statistics are needed and produced for monetary policy in the EMU?
Monetary statistics, securities statistics, balance of payments statistics,
financial accounts, payments systems statistics.

Tuesday, 23 October 2018

Lecture 2: Data quality in the ESCB as the product of a strong legal basis,
a decentralised organization and a strong cooperation by the ECB in the
statistical production  processes.

Addressing the heterogeneity of the Euroarea by focusing on granular
(“micro”) data (in addition to the aggregate statistics). Which granular
data is the ESCB developing for policy purposes?

Thursday, 25 October 2018

Lecture 3: Linking different micro, and micro and macro data bases. The
crucial role and important initiatives towards of standardization. Central
banks and Big Data. Data as a public good – dissemination and access. ”No
good supervision without good data” – Macro prudential and supervisory
statistics.
