*Open Call for Papers for a Special Issue on*

*"Climate and Environment"*

*Statistical & Probability Letters*

https://www.journals.elsevier.com/statistics-and-probability-letters/

The recent fast growth of data storage and production in environmental and
climate sciences poses multi-faceted challenges for modern statistical
sciences at methodological, computational and applied levels.

For instance, modern satellite earth and atmosphere observing systems
produce new massive geo-referenced space-time data streams that can be used
to enhance our understanding of climate change and dynamics, including
weather- and climate-induced risks.

Such data typically exhibit disparate space-time resolution and require
further calibration to be properly used in the analysis of climate dynamics
and to quantify associated uncertainties. Furthermore, recently there has
been an increasing interest in developing new statistical tools and models
for data defined over complex domains such as, for example, sphere by time
(3D) or a spherical shell by time (4D) at the global level.

Other important examples are related to the impacts of climate change on
all facets of environment, biosphere and socio-economic system, including
drought and desertification, environmental epidemiology, marine food chain
disruption and sustainable energy, which require development of new
approaches to modeling, analysis and forecasting.

This special issue follows the scientific debate developed at the
Conference TIES-GRASPA 2017, Bergamo, July 24-26, 2017, which is the 27th
Annual Conference of The International Environmetrics Society joint with
Biennial GRASPA Conference. In order to share this debate with the entire
scientific community, this *open call* seeks for the high quality
contributions, both methodological and applied, that highlight the role of
state-of-the-art statistical methodology for modern climate and
environmental studies.

*Guest editors*

*Submission procedure*

• Papers are expected by October 31, 2017, but earlier submission is warmly
encouraged. In fact submission will start on October 1st.

• Manuscripts are expected to be submitted on-line using Elsevier Editorial
System following the Guide for Authors available at
https://www.journals.elsevier.com/statistics-and-probability-letters.

• Submitted manuscripts must follow the journal editorial standards. In
particular, contributions are limited to 6 journal pages (13 double-space
typed manuscript pages) including all references, tables and figures, with
an abstract of no more than 40 words. Supplementary material or
E-components (movies, animation sequences, high-resolution images,
background datasets, sound clips, etc) should be no more than 10 figures
and/or tables in combined total, and no more than 2000 words of text. All
submitted manuscripts will undergo the standard reviewing process of
Statistics and Probability Letters.
