Workshop Highlights - The Workshop aims to promote discussion on the role of local physical, historical, cultural, environmental and human resources for tourism, and their economic, social and environmental impact on communities.
The appropriate use of local resources can be highly influential to both the business of private actors and the development of local economies. The function of historical, cultural and environmental heritage, as well as of any place of interest for the leisure experience, goes beyond being part of a tourist’s set of places to visit or activities do while on holiday. If properly addressed and harmonised with the policies of both public private sector, they may improve the visibility and attractiveness of a place in a way that local communities may benefit directly and indirectly from them.
Discussion on the use of local resources for tourism comes along with the one on their sustainable exploitation. With this regard the role of public choice is crucial in order to address the sometimes-conflicting interests between private entrepreneurs and local communities towards a virtuous path of development. Coordinated policy actions should concern the creation of preconditions for granting accessibility to attractors for the audience in search for leisure experience. Such actions should be addressed in order to avoid the inefficient use of local resources. On the one side, overuse can threaten preservation and then reduce the impact of tourism on local communities. On the other side, underuse and the related missing activation of portions of the potential demand may prevent local communities from positive economic impact.
Appropriate promotion of local resources for tourism can benefit especially those regions whose economic growth is slow or stagnant. If inserted in a wider context of territorial promotion, they may both contribute to endogenous growth, and attract investment from abroad.
Challenges for both policymakers and market operators are indeed multiple and complex. Knowledge of the demand is the basis for proper decisions, along with efficient use of investment, coordination with other sectors such as culture, transportation and agribusiness, promotion policies. Indeed, all these and other aspects cannot be reduced to mere endeavours neither of creating market value from positive externalities of local resources, nor of giving proper incentives to reduce negative externalities. Rather, they should be part of a widespread vision for the development of local communities.

Topics - The workshop calls for original papers on one or more of the following topics:
- analysis of tourism demand: the impact of local attractions on communities;
- tourism management, policies and local development;
- business, entrepreneurship and local resources;
- cultural, environmental and human local resources;
- public expenditure and investment: turning a local resource to an attraction for tourism;
- innovation in tourism and the promotion of local resources;
- synergies of tourism with other local sectors, such as agribusiness, food industry and local products;
- sustainable use of local resources;
- transportation and accessibility to local resources.
