*Master of Science (MSc) Scholarship *

*Project:* Developing Inversion Methods for Non-stationary Thinning of Point
Processes

An MSc scholarship is available to support a student for full-time study
towards a research Master's degree in the project specified above in the
Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Otago in
Dunedin. Details are as follows:

*Award offered: University of Otago Master program -- MARSDEN FUNDED*

*Length of Tenure: 12 months or until thesis is submitted (whichever is
earlier)*

*Emolument per annum: NZ$16,000 plus domestic tuition fee waiver**

*Additional funding is available for travel*

*Start date: The earliest start date is May 2015 (can be negotiated)*

*Part-time study: Part-time study is not permitted*

** *For international applicants who need to pay international tuition fees,
the scholarship contributes a fee maximum of domestic tuition and the
successful candidate needs to meet the remainder of the international tuition
fees http://www.otago.ac.nz/international/otago002190.html**

This scholarship is funded by a Royal Society of New Zealand Marsden
Fast-start grant awarded to Dr Ting Wang (Department of Mathematics and
Statistics, University of Otago). The regulations governing the award are the
same as those for University of Otago Scholarships:

This project aims to develop analytical and numerical methods to inverse point
processes with non-stationary missing probabilities, where the probability of
missing an event depends on time and event size. The successful applicant will
learn point process theory; carry out part of the simulation study and some
data analysis using the statistical software R under the supervision of Dr
Ting Wang. As the Associate Investigators (AIs) Associate Professor Jiancang
Zhuang (Institute of Statistical Mathematics, Tokyo) and Dr Koji Kiyosugi
(University of Tokyo) are both based in Japan, a visit to Japan is likely to
be funded by this project for the student to receive informal mentoring from
the AIs.

*Eligibility*

Applicants should hold a BSc (Hons) or equivalent four year degree in
Statistics or a related discipline with a strong research interest. For an
exceptional graduate student who has only completed a BSc degree without
Honours year, additional scholarship may be awarded for the year of course
studies.

*Applying for this scholarship*

Please contact Dr Ting Wang (twang at maths.otago.ac.nz
<mailto:twang at maths.otago.ac.nz>, http://www.stats.otago.ac.nz/?People
=ting_wang) and provide a covering letter explaining your interest in this
project, a CV, a copy of your full academic transcript, and details of two
academic referees.
