Titolo: Mixture Models with High-Dimensional Data

Abstract: Mixture distributions are being commonly employed these days to
model and cluster heterogeneous data in a wide variety of fields.

They provide a very flexible approach to clustering data as they allow for
clusters of varying shapes, including asymmetry, and for the presence of
outliers. However, for a large number of variables p, mixtures of normal and
t-component distributions are highly parameterized models since the
component scale matrices consist of

p(p+1)/2 distinct parameters. Moreover, in many problems these days, the
number of observations n is relatively small compared to p. Hence some form
of dimension reduction and/or regularization is needed in such situations.
In this talk we shall discuss some methods for this purpose, focusing on the
use of mixtures of factor models.
