ABSTRACT
In a conventional treatment of finite mixture models, there is a famous
issue called the labeling problem. It shows up prominently in any
sampling based assessment of uncertainty in the parameters, like MCMC or
bootstrap. We will argue that for either a Bayesian or likelihoodist,
there is really only one gold standard solution to this problem, and it
is based on the topology of the inference function being used.
The reasoning is asymptotic, a way of statistical thinking that has an
indelible footprint. Other labeling methods could possibly be judged by
their ability to replicate this solution.
