NIHR Research Methods Summer Internship
School of Public Health / Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics /
MRC-HPA Centre for Environment and Health
Set salary of £3,500 plus £1000 in consumables (for the duration of the
contract)
The MRC-HPA Centre for Environment and Health led by Professor Paul
Elliott, with over 240 researchers in more than 25 research groups
across Imperial and King's College London
(http://www.environment-health.ac.uk/Default.aspx). The Centre includes
the Small Area Health Statistics Unit (SAHSU) which has a strong
methodological focus on the health effects of environmental pollutants
including air pollution, unparalleled access to small area (postcoded)
health data on mortality and hospital admissions (by specific cause),
and a thriving Geographical Information Systems (GIS), statistical and
database team.
The unit is now advertising for a Research Methods Summer Internship,
funded by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR), to allow a
talented graduate to receive training and mentoring in statistical
methodology for environmental and spatial epidemiology. The internship
would be ideal for an undergraduate student following the second year of
their degree or between the third and fourth year of a four year degree.
The applicant will need to demonstrate a strong performance in their
undergraduate training to date in a relevant degree (statistics,
mathematics or a related quantitative subject) and will be required to
provide a letter of support from a tutor/academic supervisor. Knowledge
of Bayesian statistics and statistical packages R is also an essential
requirement for the post.
The applicant will be shown current best practice for statistical
analysis of spatial/environmental data and will have the opportunity to
contribute to the development of a model to study the determinants of
road accidents in the UK.
The post is full time and fixed term for the 2013 summer period (approx.
3 months), specific dates to be finalised with the successful candidate
and the post holder will be based at St Mary’s Campus, Paddington.
For an informal discussion about the post please contact Marta
Blangiardo (m.blangiardo a imperial.ac.uk) or Areti Boulieri
(a.boulieri a imperial.ac.uk).
Closing Date
12 May 2013 (midnight BST)
