Abstract

Using data on Italian couples from the longitudinal survey "Family and Social Subjects" conducted between 2003 and 2007, we examine the relationship between child-timing intentions and subsequent outcomes. We hypothesize that the presence of agreement between partners has an inhibiting effect on couple's fertility behavior because social norms would favor the partner who does not want children. We find out that this holds true only for couples who share already two or more children. Whereas at lower parities the event of conflicting intentions brings either to a middle fertility outcome or toward childbearing levels similar to those observed for couples who agree on having a child. Women have a greater influence on childbearing decisions than men do. The explicit consideration of partner's agreement increases the predictive accuracy of the child-timing intentions in the fertility models. Our findings strongly support the opportunity to gather data on reproduction plans of both partners.
