A Meditation on Measurement Validity and Methods of
Validation: Where We Have Come From and the State
of the Art Today

Abstract: With strategic intent, this presentation meditates on the conceptual foundations of measurement validity through overview of the major views (outlooks) on the nature of validity itself and the process of validation. The presentation will begin with a brief glance at the history of measurement validity as a way of setting the stage for a discussion of what is today meant by validity and the process of validation. The ultimate aims are to provide an overview of my recent developments in the field, and provide some suggestions for future development in measurement in the psychological, social, and health sciences.

Bruno D. Zumbo, Professor, Measurement Evaluation and Research Methodology, as well as member of the Department of Statistics and the Institute of Applied Mathematics at the University of British Columbia. He is the former Editor of the International Journal of Testing and the current Associate Editor of the Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods. His primary interests are in psychometrics, statistical science, and the mathematical and philosophical foundations of measurement. He is an elected Fellow of the American Educational Research Association (AERA), a 2010 recipient of the Research Fellow Award of the International Society for Quality of Life Studies (ISQOLS), and the 2005 recipient of the Samuel J. Messick Memorial Lecture Award jointly by ETS, LTRC, and ILTA in recognition for his work in psychometrics and validity theory. For a list of his recent work please see
