Abstract
A challenging problem facing scientific experimentation is how to deal with the large volume of data that are continuously generated in several research areas, from Biology to Chemistry or Material Science. Data are growing in size, dimensions and complexity; procedures such as data mining methods or visualization techniques are encountering growing difficulties in extracting information from such data sets. In this seminar we will explore a different perspective to deal with the Big Data problem: instead of producing vast data-sets and then seeking to extract the information buried within it, we propose a way to produce small (very small) "intelligent" data sets, i.e. data containing the relevant information for the problem under study. The procedure is a model-based evolutionary design of experiments that generates small sets of data, with low dimensionality, and high information on the system.
