.: Algebraic Statistical models :.

Abstract:
We shall show how some important classes of statistical models,
including some
log-linear models and independence models, are algebraic varieties
under suitable parametrization.
For some of this models the primary decomposition of polynomial ideals
give insight on the
different components of the models. Some comments on issues related to
singularities and
to models inspired by the algebra will be made. This presentation is
intended as an
elementary introduction to a topic that is involving an increasing
number of researchers in statistics and algebraic geometry.

.: Understanding the Geometry underlying Two Types of Discrete Tree :.

Abstract:
The Bayesian network is a common way of representing high
dimensional discrete problems. Another is the event tree. In this talk I
will demonstrate how certain classes of polynomial equations are
intrinsic to both these classes of model and how understanding the
geometry behind this semi-algebraic description enhances our
understanding of the nature and implications of these model classes. The
talk will be illustrated by two classes of model: binary BN tree models
with hidden variables and event tree models with coalescence.
