.: Random effects regression with menstrual markers of the menopausal
transition :.
Aim
Verify the classification into ‘early’ or ‘late’ of certain elements
of patterns of sequences of menstrual cycle lengths defined as markers
of entry to stages of the menopausal transition. The transition is
defined as a time of increasing variability in cycle length leading up
to the final menstrual period.
Method
Random effects regression of cycle length sequences on age during
person-dependent time intervals beginning at age 35 years and ending
at the age at which the marker event occurs to each woman, using data
from a landmark study (the TREMIN data).
Results
With cycle-dependent events previously designated as markers of entry
to the ‘early’ stage of the transition as age-endpoints, age-slope
estimates are negative (a continuation of the pattern established
during the reproductive years). With ‘late’ stage markers as
endpoints, increasing cycle length variability ensures age-slope
estimates are positive.
Conclusion
A simple but powerful statistical technique applied in a slightly
unconventional way confirms the classification already agreed by the
ReSTAGE Collaboration, an international research group.
Cordiali saluti
