Global income inequality today

The talk, largely based on the book "Worlds Apart", will address the issues of measurement, trends in, and implications of global inequality, that is inequality between citizens of the world. It will also discuss several other ways of looking at global inequality, including divergence in countries' GDPs per capita which is a major force behind the current wave of migration. Some very tentative reflections on the effects of the current crisis will be offered.

Institutions and Entrepreneurship in Eastern Europe

The talk will outline the levels of entrepreneurial activity around the world, which indicates that this is lower in transition economies than elsewhere. In seeking to explain this, one focuses on institutions, both formal and informal. In practice, the former may substitute to some extent for the latter, though the evidence suggests that higher level institutions are needed for more sophisticated forms of entrepreneurship, and these are the ones that generate jobs and growth. I will conclude by considering why it is so hard to change institutions, and what will have to be done to break the institutional inertia. I will also consider whether such institutional changes have been made easier or harder by current economic conditions.
