AVVISO DI SEMINARIO

Il giorno 22 novembre, lunedì, il prof. Francesco Billari del Max Planck
Institute for Demographic Research, Rostock (Germany), terrà, presso il
Dip. di Satistica e Matematica dell'Università di Torino (Piazza Arbarello
8, Aula 7 secondo piano, h. 14.45 ) il seguente seminario:

ANALISI DELLE SEQUENZE E CORSI DI VITA DEMOGRAFICI

Abstract:
In this paper, we focus on the sequence representation of life courses,
with particular emphasis on its use in demography. First, the distinction
between nonrecurrent and recurrent sequence is formally presented and
briefly discussed. Then, the paper is principally focused on the analysis
of recurrent sequences. We analyse the options that one may choose when
willing to describe life courses as sequences, emphasising the distinction
between cross-sectional and longitudinal approaches, as well as between
static and dynamic approaches. We then discuss a data analysis approach to
the study of sequences, recalling the optimal matching algorithm and
introducing a monothetic divisive algorithm for the clustering of sequences
of life courses. For the clustering of life courses, the distinct meaning
of variable versus individual-based approaches is emphasised. Furthermore,
two examples of application from our own research are presented. Finally,
we discuss the whole approach and trace prospects for future research.

Tutti gli interessati sono invitati a partecipare.
