Announcement & call for papers

Please, transmit the following information to whom it may concern

In the period 8-15 April 1997 a Workshop on
CONDITIONING AND INFERENCE IN INTELLIGENT SYSTEMS
will take place in the framework of the International School
of Mathematics "G. Stampacchia", which has its seat at the
famous "Ettore Majorana Centre for Scientific Culture" of
ERICE, a small town in Sicily, on top of a mountain (750 m.
above sea level). Homer, Theocritus, Polybius, Virgil, Hora-
ce and others have celebrated this magnificent spot in their
poems : at present Erice is a mixture of ancient and mediev-
al architecture, with its Cyclopean Walls, Castle of Venus
and Gothic Cathedral. Other masterpieces of ancient civili-
zations and splendid beaches are in the neighbourhoods.

The aim of the Workshop, directed by Giulianella Coletti
(Universita' di Perugia, Italy) and Romano Scozzafava (Uni-
versita' "La Sapienza", Roma, Italy), is to give an overview
of the state-of-the-art and of research trends concerning
the various aspects and methodologies for the management of
partial and revisable information in automated reasoning:
particular emphasis will be given to conditioning and infe-
rence.
Some more detailed information on the running of the
Workshop follows. Participants should arrive in Erice on
Tuesday, April 8, not later than 5 p.m., and leave on the
morning of Tuesday, April 15. The workshop will start on
Wednesday morning at 9 a.m.: the format includes lectures,
seminars, contributed papers (as a poster session), a round
table (on Monday morning). An excursion is being planned on
Sunday.
The Proceedings will be published as a special issue of
SOFT COMPUTING RESEARCH JOURNAL (Springer Verlag): detailed
instructions will be given during the Workshop. The deadline
will be the end of June 1997.

Here is the list of invited speakers:
B.Bouchon-Meunier (Non-deductive Fuzzy reasoning)
M.Di Bacco (Pooling Expert Opinions)
A.Di Nola (Algebraic Models for Lukasiewicz Logic)
J.Y.Jaffray (Conditioning and Dynamic Decision Making under
             Uncertainty)
F.V.Jensen (Inference in directed acyclic graphs)
E.P.Klement (Measures of Fuzzy Sets)
F.Lad (The Operational Characterization of Conditional
       Probability)
G.Regoli (Inference under Imprecise Probability Assessments)
Ph.Smets (Conditioning and Combination in Belief Models)
S.Termini (On Quantum Logic and Revisable Reasoning)
R.R.Yager (Generalized Inference Techniques for Fuzzy
            Modeling)

Persons wishing to attend the Workshop should write to:

Prof G.Coletti
Dip. di Matematica
Via Vanvitelli 1
06100 PERUGIA
E-mail : coletti@dipmat.unipg.it
phone: 39-75-5855019
fax: 39-75-5855024

They should specify: (i) date and place of birth, toge-
ther with present nationality; (ii) degree, graduating In-
stitute and other academic qualifications; (iii) list of
publications; (iv) present position and place of work; (v)
address, telephone, fax, e-mail (if any); (vi) motives for
wishing to attend.
Young persons with only little experience should enclose
a letter of recommendation from the head of their research
group or from a senior person active in the field.
The TOTAL FEE, which includes a copy of the proceedings,
full board and lodging (arranged by the School), is US $700.
Thanks to the generosity of the sponsoring Institutions,
support can be granted to some deserving students who need
financial help. Requests to this effect must be specified
and justified in the letter of application.

No special application form is required. Closing date for
application and for contributed papers (extended abstracts
of 2-3 pages): February 28, 1997.
A letter will be sent to successful applicants by March
15, 1997. Admission to the Workshop will be decided in
consultation with the Advisory Committee of the School
composed of Professors G.Coletti, F.Giannessi, R.Scozzafava
and A.Zichichi.
